OK, I admit it- this is a cliche image: the isolated tree in a field. I could say this is a new take on that classic (cliched) image, and maybe I will because it makes me feel better. There are two things that I think make this image special. First is the colors, and second… Read More
Dave Koch Photo Wins Best of State
Just after returning from the Oregon Coast shoots last week, I was notified that the winners of Best of State had been announced, and my personal and landscape work won Best of State for Nature Photography. Just being nominated is incredible, but to win Best of State has my head spinning. The Best of State… Read More
Capitol Reef Barn Photo Dissection
The Capitol Reef Barn is a landmark and and icon of the Capitol Reef National Park. Practically everyone- photographer and tourist alike- stop to take it’s picture because the appeal of the image is so strong. And I am no different. When I first got to this area, I had to take the shot too-… Read More
How To Develop Better, Higher Resolution Panoramas
You have your panorama images all set up, and you are ready to combine them into one titanic large image. Well hold on there hombre, there’s a few things we have to do in Lightroom before we whip out the glue. First, if you followed my previous directions, you shot all your images in RAW…. Read More
Goblin Milky Way (or Racing the Dawn To Shoot The Milky Way)
My first trip to Goblin Valley was so much fun, and such a success for me, that my wife insisted I return the following weekend… with her. I’m good with that. There were some images I wanted to revisit, and some places I never got to I wanted to explore. So for the second week… Read More
How To Shoot Better, Higher Resolution Panoramas

Turret Arch (or Patience You Must Have Young Padawan)
Arches National Park is a pretty popular park. The park is very interactive, too; it begs you to walk, to touch and to explore. Arches, after all, are made to be climbed on. You can’t climb over the Arches, of course; the rangers frown on that. But tourist can- and do- climb all over beneath… Read More
Too Much…. The Magic Bus
Wow- Sunday was a busy day. And a very diverse day. Three locations, three models, 100’s of miles and 100’s of images… and it was all a blast. I got more- and better- images than I was even hope for. And despite 6 solid, draining hours of shooting, everyone was laughing and having a great… Read More
Sun Dog (or how to get sunbursts in your pictures)
The blue of the shadows in the valley combine with the red of the rocks or make a strange purple tint in the shadows. The sun pours gold onto the landscape. The sphinx-dog looks to the west. Every rock shape looks like something.
Quickie in Arches – Photo Dissection
This was one of my first times out with my new D810. I had it paired with a Tamron 24-70, which is an awesome little lens. Not very little or light though!
