The LDS temples are buildings dedicated to be a House of the Lord according to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Considered by the Mormons to be the most sacred structures on earth, LDS Temples are only open to current members in good standing. However, temples are usually open to the public for a short period of time upon their completion or after a heavy renovation.
The statue atop most temples is of a figure named Moroni, a prophet of God who lived on the American continent about 400 years after the birth of Jesus Christ.
The first LDS Temple was built in Kirkland Ohio in 1836. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints currently has 168 dedicated temples (160 currently operating; and 8 being renovated), 27 are currently under construction, totally 195 Temples across the world. The church has announced an additional 36 temples not yet under construction.
